Then, I collaged words cut out from magazines that related to my aspirations for the future as well as related to my qualities. Due to the cosmic-like background, I was tempted to use quite strong and exotic words to describe me. I believe doing this in a group also made me discover words that I probably hadn’t thought of before, for example, as the tutor was helping everyone find words, she pointed out some words such as “dreamer” or “maverik”.
I believe I could try and add some images or drawings. I saw some line drawing in one of the magazines that could have been cut out and collaged first and then added words on top.
My paint strip had a more abstract design to it. I wanted to try something a bit different and used a pallet knife to drag the colour across the strip. I felt quite good when doing this as I felt less restriction in my experimentation. Due to the time and the fact that I was concentrating more on the technique, I just used the same colours that I had for the first strip. Because of the more messy, abstract marks, I thought I’d use more common words but that would still be specific to me. I thought of words in relation with me and the world, and things I heard or said, for example when I say to Rob “check it out!” and how I like to “explore” the world and get excited about “transformations” in it.
Most of the words I had put down in the same position (diagonal), I feel I should have had them in different positions, however, I think this creates some sort of line making the viewers read from left to right, although they could be emphasised by the big sized of the letters in the middle.
When I did my marbling strip I found it quite exciting to make it. although it was quite simple, the procedure was very interesting. I had to get tray with water and adding drops of oil based paint to it and then using a stick slightly mix the different coloured drops, I believe this is what created the swirly effect, which I really liked. when I looked at the result I could tell that there was the effect of movement and I could also see the shapes from the drops. I like how some are darker than others because I feel like more free when things aren’t completely neat, when things are sometimes inaccurate or uneven.
This is the one strip where I thought I should add those exotic words, I thought the colours of the letters and their background went quite well with the marbled background.
British Values research
According to Ofsted, ‘fundamental British values’ comprise:
Democracy can be seen as a state of society characterised by equality of rights and privileges. It can also refer to our nation’s electoral systems.
In school we promote the importance of democracy through such things as:
The free and fair electoral process for student positions of responsibility.
Students being encouraged to consider alternative pathways in lessons.
Student Voice on key school decisions through processes including online whole school surveying. · Students also elect peers to represent them.
Individual liberty suggests the free exercise of rights generally seen as outside
Government control.
In school we promote the importance of individual liberty through such things as:
The increasing liberty afforded to students as they move up through the years.
6th Form allowed to leave the site at certain times, some KS4 groups taught off-site.
The number of extra-curricular activities and clubs, including extended studies.
Students encouraged to voice views in lessons in a formative manner.
Students offered freedom over choices regarding academic pathways.
Elements of choice in the school canteen within healthy boundaries.
Rule of Law
All people and institutions are subject to and accountable to law that is fairly applied and enforced.
In school we promote the importance of the rule of law through such things as:
There is a shared classroom code of practice.
Marking and feedback, as well as homework, policies set clear boundaries which are explained clearly to students.
Accountability (responsibility) is stressed to all stakeholders including staff (teacher’s Standards), students (Student Code of Conduct), and Governors.
Mutual Respect
The proper regard for an individual’s dignity, which is reciprocated.
In school we promote the importance of mutual respect through such things as:
Classroom code of practice.
School ethos statement
Clear guidance on good behaviour in areas such as the Canteen.
The publishing and enforcement of a smart dress code for students and staff (uniform)
Wellbeing promotes mutual respect through the skills developed in sessions/assemblies and the repetition of related content across the ‘slates’ / schemes.
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
A fair, objective, and permissive attitude to those whose faith and beliefs may differ from one’s own.
In school we promote the importance of tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs through such things as:
Observance of Founder’s Day and Christmas services.
Acceptance of faith symbolism.
Religious Studies taught to all students across KS3 & 4.
Governance includes faith representative from the Church of England.
Faith assemblies.

I chose an easy small word to use for my wire word test so that I could have enough time in case of it going wrong or wanting to make more tests. The result was quite interesting, the continuous line creates a good effect on the audience as there are no gaps making them read until the end. the word becomes a whole rather than individual letters. The wire is a three dimensional medium which enhances the relationship between the viewers and the word. If it was on a photograph or 2 dimensional it would not be as emphasising. It makes people more attracted to it and physically be interested.
This mono print was done on tissue paper. Unfortunately it didn’t work as I wanted, which would most likely be because I had used too much paint. The different direction in which I had written the word respect suggests that respect should be something that everyone gives to each other, it should be gained as well as given no matter where we’re from or how we look. This is more emphasised by the background colour as yellow is tends to be used as a sign of warning, therefore instead of forcing it, it suggests this should be considered.
I think this test was quite nice. I was used to mono-print on plain paper and I was suggested to try printing on a different type of paper (acetate). I like the effect of acetate reflecting the light, and how I can see through it. When I printed I was expecting for the whole sheet to be covered with paint, but it turned out quite differently. I was interested in the effect of spaces in between the paint as I can still see though the acetate which is good as it isn’t taking away the paper’s properties. I though this could show a message of individual liberty as you can see the background, everyone has the right to see through.
Nail and Thread Letters
This test was very exciting and eye catching, the lines crossing each other in contrast with a background set of lines and the fact that I twisted the thread in pattern, this emphasises people to scan the letter by following the lines. Some sections turned out a bit messy as it was hard to keep the pattern. The thread kept coming out of the nails, this would most likely be due to how loose it was, I had to keep it tight but also be careful that I did’t have it too tight as it could pull out the nails. I had to make sure they were at a good level to be stable. I like how structural the shape of the letter looks with this technique, whereas with wire it looks more simple and less detailed, unless I used other types of wire such as copper or gold wire and covered the positive space rather than just the outline.
For my ‘Y’ letter I used felt like using warm colours like gold and orange, though I wasn’t really linking it to the letter. Later I noticed that ‘Y’ could stand for yellow and so gold, being a tone of yellow and orange, which is made using red as well as yellow, could actually be linked to ‘Y’. For my ‘M’ I used a mix of cold and warm colours, this didn’t actually link to the letter but I used contrasting colours which I believe where quite emphasising.
Evaluation
I found this project a bit hard to complete as it was only two weeks long. I didn’t have enough time to get as many tests as I wanted and I also struggled to get a lot of blogging done. Next time I will try to manage my time better now that I got used to my time table. I have learned quite a lot of techniques, although some I had already learnt in the previews years, using them again helped me improve and think of other ways in which I could use them. With some techniques, for example mono printing, I thought of my specialism and so I tested printing on fabric. I was more satisfied with some tests than others, however, I’ve learnt to look back to these and improve from them. Some of my mono prints didn’t work very well and so this made me consider how much paint I use or what tools I use to create marks.
I enjoyed doing my wire tests as I feel more excited when working with 3D media. I also enjoyed doing thread letter blocks. I felt like I was building some sort of structure and as I tied the thread around it I felt quite carried away with it and really enjoyed it.
I believe that once I know exactly what I have to do I can enjoy it and do more of of it. I find it harder to do more when I have to ask what I am doing in the middle of a project.
Next project I will try to highlight every important points on handouts, and attempt to translate any complex words to a simpler language so that I can follow it better.
